Overview

As a crew member in an Actuality Abroad programme, you are not just a learner. You are a guest in a host community, a collaborator with changemakers, a teammate, and an ambassador of responsible storytelling. This Code of Conduct outlines the expectations we hold to ensure that everyone — crew members, collaborators, and the communities we engage with — can benefit from a respectful, ethical, and positive experience.

Commitments to the Host Community

We are welcomed into communities that share their lives and stories with us. We honour their trust by showing respect and gratitude for their culture, customs, and environment.

  • Be open-minded. Embrace new ways of doing things, respect local traditions, and adapt to cultural norms.
  • Leave a positive impact. Minimise waste, conserve resources, and contribute positively to the community.
  • Seek informed consent. Always ask for permission before recording anyone, and explain how their photos, videos, or audio will be used. Respect their right to say no.

Commitments to Our Collaborators

Our role is to collaborate with changemakers, not just document their stories. Strong, ethical partnerships lead to better storytelling and greater impact.

  • Respect time and space. Be punctual, engaged, and attentive during all interactions.
  • Stay transparent. Share your plans for using any content or stories and seek permission for future projects or additional uses.
  • Act with integrity. Represent their stories truthfully, without distortion or exaggeration.

Commitments to Each Other as Crew Members

Teamwork is the foundation of a successful project. We succeed when we support and respect each other.

  • Set clear expectations. Agree on responsibilities, roles, and commitments as a team.
  • Stay committed. Show up on time for all briefings, workshops, and meetings, fully prepared to participate.
  • Ask for help. If team dynamics falter, seek assistance from the Field Producer to resolve issues constructively.

Commitments to the Actuality Abroad Team

The Actuality Abroad team is here to guide and support your journey. A collaborative relationship ensures a rewarding experience for everyone.

  • Keep communication open. Share concerns or challenges promptly and honestly.
  • Trust the Field Producer. They are here to help you succeed and ensure the group's well-being.
  • Engage actively. While the team provides guidance, your active participation is key to a successful project.

Commitments to Yourself

Your personal growth is just as important as the success of the project. Prioritise your well-being and embrace the experience.

  • Take care of yourself. Rest, stay hydrated, and maintain your health.
  • Be accountable. Fulfil your commitments, be punctual, and contribute fully.
  • Stay curious. This is your chance to learn, grow, and step outside your comfort zone.

Accountability

Warnings will be issued if any of the following occur: disregarding the guidelines in this Code of Conduct, repeated failure to participate in scheduled activities, antisocial behaviour that disrupts or negatively impacts the group, or ignoring safety rules established at programme orientation.

Immediate dismissal will result if any of the following occur: criminal activity as per local laws, physical violence towards anyone, verbal abuse towards anyone, or endangering the lives of others.

If dismissed, you will have 48 hours to vacate programme housing, must immediately return any Actuality Abroad equipment in your possession, and will not be credited in the final film project. No programme fees will be refunded.
